I bought this book yesterday and read it in one sitting. It starts out in the "old days" when film was hand-developed and you had to wear red goggles to "dark adapt" to do fluroscopy and ends with doctors doing interventional radiology and film is no more. I was a radiologic technologist for over 50 years, retired 10 years ago and still miss the work. I would have loved working with each one of the radiologists in this book. This book would be great for students of today to read and to see from whence their profession came. I only have one little quibble about this...the author refers to us as "technicians" several times. We are TECHNOLOGISTS. There is a difference!Product details

Radiologists at Work Saving Lives with the Lights Off (Audible Audio Edition) Carolyn Jourdan Eric Martin Athenaeus Media Books Reviews
Very good book that gave a wide range of information about radiologists. The book was well composed and was easy to read and follow. The short sections/stories covered a great deal of specialties and what radiologists handle.
If you ever worked around a hospital, you know how important xray is. Well here is a book, told by Radiologists. Hear how the specialty developed, and some of the history behind the scenes. Great story
This informative and illuminating book is a wonderful tool for understanding the Speciality and, the importance of the Radiologist, who plays a vital role...in many ways the lynchpin, of a medical team. While the Surgeon is in many cases considered the Rock Star, the Radiologist should have the same status. You will want the companion book, so order both at the same time. They are quick, compelling and entertaining reads.
Lots of insight, great anecdotes and a fine view of what radiologists do. Despite having had various treatments and consults by radiologists over the years, I didn't grasp the full extent of their work, nor had I given much thought to the many ways in which the specialty has changed.
My only criticism would be that the book would benefit from a narrative overview of the field from its early days to the present. We do get a sense of this from the many quoted interviews, but I was hungry for more.
However, I really enjoyed this and learned a lot.
Reading this book is like sitting down with a couple of dozen close friends who happen to be radiologists that share their most private experiences with you. You will laugh, cry, and shake your head in wonder. Tumors disappear,; patients survive the impossible and do the most outrageous things. Sadly, the book comes to an end much too soon--leaving the reader looking for more books by the same author-
If you love books by Mary Roach like STIFF, you will be thrilled to discover another author who tells it like it is.
This was a fun, quick read. As a nurse, I was interested to learn more about an aspect of healthcare that is so important to what we do everyday, but remote from my own experience. Because of my clinical background I wished this was just a little bit more technical. It's written in a way that anyone can understand and it does a great job of showing the stresses, satisfactions, and everyday life of working as a radiologist. An unexpected bonus was that the author's interviews included older radiologists who trained after WWII - and their descriptions of their residency training take you back to a different world that's hard to imagine now, which makes for some great anecdotes.
This book was a bit of history mixed in with the vignettes of radiologists at work.
While I enjoyed hearing from the doctors about their challenging cases, I really appreciated the more historical aspects of how radiology got to where it is now and how much the discipline has changed. In fact, I would have preferred if that was the focus of the book rather than the individual radiologists discussing their jobs.
It was interesting to note that radiologists are one of the few (if not only) aspect of medicine that doesn’t usually interact directly with the patients.
This was a quick read and well-worth buying if the subject is of interest.
I give this book at 4 out of 5 stars.
