Written by Mark Twain during the Philippine-American War in the first decade of the twentieth century, The War Prayer tells of a patriotic church service held to send the town's young men off to war. During the service, a stranger enters and addresses the gathering. He tells the patriotic crowd that their prayers for victory are double-edged-by praying for victory they are also praying for the destruction of the enemy... for the destruction of human life.

The War Prayer edition by Mark Twain Literature Fiction eBooks

This is a poem written by Mark Twain about the horror of war in a way that challenges folks to examine blind patriotism at any cost. It is beautifully written and well worth reading simply from a literary standpoint. It is certainly relevant for anyone concerned with ethical considerations of war and mass destruction/death.

The War Prayer edition by Mark Twain Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The story itself is a classic and will be well-enjoyed by most readers.

The low rating is because this edition is incredibly difficult to cite for academic purposes. No information about the publisher is readily available. Strongly caution anyone who doesn't want a headache citing this book to pick up a different copy.
When reading this, and seeing the pictures that illustrate this work, I could almost hear what is happening, and what he was trying to say, which is to be careful what you pray for, sometimes when you wish good for yourself, you wish for harm for others, even if you do not intend to do so. This is a story that I think should be read more, and I happen to like the drawings and production value, unlike a couple of reviewers who did not think it appropriate, I thought they made it more relevant
Like some other reviewers, I have known this book for a long time and given away many copies over the years. It ought to be required reading for heads of state, especially those who lack the attention span for _All Quiet on the Western Front_. Older printings have the spare illustrations by John Groth in the same dark red color this edition has on the cover. Please tell the publisher to restore that color to the pages. Although the art still supplements and accents the text very well, the artist chose the color for a reason and his wishes ought to be honored. I would have paid more for the correct color.
When I was teaching college, Mark Twain's THE WAR PRAYER was part of my students' required reading. Few people knew that Mark Twain.wrote such serious observations. This is a study in logic, critical thinking and a bit of Socratic dialogue. It is intriguing, thought-provoking and challenging of preconceived notions. A MUST read.
1) This is not "annotated," unless you define "annotated" as "includes a brief biography for padding and it's still just 26 pages." I expected information regarding "War Prayer" specifically, that being my definition of "annotated."

2) The "War Prayer" itself can be found in my complete Mark Twain, which goes for the same 99 cents that "War Prayer"alone does.

I was lured in by the "annotated," but I am now returning this book.
This little book and/or poem should be required reading in all schools, all over the world. Every single person should read this
tiny book. Probably the shortest work by Mr. Twain/Clemens. And the drawings that accompany the pages are perfect. Takes all of
about 2 minutes to read and will stay with you for life. No it is NOT a humor story that Twain is so famous for. Mr. Twain wrote quite a few
serious books that most people have never read. Another excellent book or books are Eve's Diary and Adam's Diary. Funny stories that also have a strong story line and ending. Oh, the ending! Read Eve's first, then Adam's.
It took me less than 15 minutes to read it for the first time.I've read many times since. It made me a confirmed pacifist. It called me to account for the faith I profess, which I no longer take lightly. Read this. But only if you're brave. And honest.
